Culture Night: Chopsticks Dance
The young women of Northern Vietnam are known for silk spinning. The song Thoi To is about young girls given the task of spinning silk cultivated by their families. Innocent and carefree, they perform a dance that hovers somewhere between their daydreams and the hard reality of their lives in the countryside.

Culture Night: Non La (Leaf-Hat) Dance
Because Vietnam is an agricultural society, the leaf-hat, or nón lá, plays an integral part of Vietnam’s history and culture. Traditionally, it brings to mind images of youthful girls with long black hair, peeking shyly from beneath the rim. But more than that, the nón lá symbolizes the spirit of the Vietnamese nation. Set to the song Ðón Xuân the dance paints a picture of the simple spring-time romance between farm boys and farm girls in the rice fields next to the Mekong River.

Culture Night: Opening Dance
This dance, set to the song Lang Du is about life journeys. The candles evoke the sense of surrealism that surrounds major transitions in our lives. Like wings, the dancing fans carry us through space and time so that we can retrace the paths taken by each family and discover the common threads that connect us all.

Culture Night: Show
Common Threads follows three families who emigrate from Vietnam to the U.S. Delving into different facets of each character, we discover how the realms of age, life history and aspirations influence his or her identity. The plot lines seek to reveal underlying themes that are lost when there is not an examination of the inherent complexities in Vietnamese or Vietnamese-American identity.
